Planning the bar for your Zimbabwean wedding

The bar is where your guests gather, toast and let loose. Here's how to plan it so it runs beautifully from the first welcome drink to the last dance — without you lifting a finger on the day.

A wedding bar isn't just "drinks on a table" — it's a series of moments. Plan for each one and the whole day flows.

Think in moments, not just bottles

Map your drinks to the shape of the day. A typical Harare wedding runs something like this:

  • Arrival & photos — a welcome drink keeps guests happy while the couple is away shooting.
  • The toast — something fizzy for the speeches, even if it's just for the top table.
  • Dinner — steady service of beers, soft drinks and wine to wash down the meal.
  • Dancing — this is your peak; ciders, beers and a signature drink move fastest here.

Welcome drinks set the tone

A drink in hand the moment guests arrive does a lot of work — it warms the room and buys time during photos. A tray of something light and refreshing (a cider, a spritzer, or a soft option) is plenty; you don't need the full bar open yet.

Cater for everyone

Zimbabwean weddings span generations. Make sure there's something for elders, designated drivers, expectant mums and kids — generous soft drinks, water and a good non-alcoholic option. No guest should feel like an afterthought, and plenty of water keeps everyone comfortable in the Harare heat.

A signature drink is a lovely touch

One simple signature cocktail or punch — in your colours, with a name — feels personal and special, and it's easier to serve at volume than a full cocktail menu. We can help you pick one that pours fast and tastes great.

How much should you buy?

As a rule of thumb, plan for about one drink per guest per hour, weighted towards beer and cider. For the full breakdown — and a calculator that does the maths for you — see our guide on how much drink to buy for your event.

Work with your venue and caterer

Talk early about where the bar will sit, access for setup, and whether there's power and water nearby. A good mobile bar arrives early, sets up out of the way, and coordinates with your caterer and planner so service is seamless.

Book early

Weekend dates in wedding season go quickly. Once you have a date and a rough headcount, lock in your bar — it's one of the easier suppliers to confirm early, and it takes a big item off your list.
